December 2011 fitness events
The holiday season’s under way, but that’s no excuse to put your feet up - keep motivated by entering one of these events.
SPAM Winter challenge
Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire
This Mountain Bike Enduro event is held on the hard-packed, all-weather trails of Salisbury Plain. With three distances to choose from (25, 35 or 50km) it’s a relaxed day designed for riders of all ages and abilities. It’s not the most competitive event or the most technical course – the emphasis is placed firmly on fun and raising money for good causes. Sponsorship isn’t a requirement, however, as all proceeds will automatically be donated to local charities.
Santa Fun Run
Kensington Gardens, London
At only 5km, there’s no excuse not to take part in the original Santa Fun Run in support of Help the Hospices. Every participant gets a free costume that must be worn, ensuring the beautiful surroundings of Kensington Park Gardens will be overrun with Santas. The festive spirit continues after the race, as finishers are rewarded with sausage rolls and mince pies, along with a medal.
New Year’s Eve Duathlon
Finish the year with a bang by taking part in the New Year’s Eve Duathlon. A 15km cycle sandwiched between two 4km runs, this race is all about speed, not endurance – perfect for eliminating any post-Christmas lethargy. The road-based course means only the very worst weather will prompt cancellation, and best of all, once it’s over New Year’s can be celebrated relatively guilt free.
