The best home dumb-bells

If you want to do your muscle-building at home, you'll need dumb-bells. Here are four of the best sets.

SelectTech 552 dumb-bells

£279

Whoever said you couldn't recreate the wheel should have chat with the designer behind these game-changing dumb-bells. One easy turn of the numbered dial on the side allows you to change the weight from 2 to 23kgs. Then all you have to do is grip the ergo handle and lift. Not really suprising that these stylish space savers are Fitness Superstore's best selling dumb-bells, then.

PowerBlock Sport 9.0

£399
BEST IN TEST

The Sport 9.0s are another set of multiweight dumb-bells, and they offer a similar range of weights – 2.5kg-22.5kg – to the SelectTechs. While they look a lot cheaper, you can buy add-on weight kits for them, which takes the weight up to a staggering 59kgs. If you're looking to go heavy and have limited space, these are definitely what you need.

Bodypower rubber hex dumb-bells

£899

For your £899 you get 18 dumb-bells ranging from 1kg up to 30kgs. Each one comprises hexagonal rubber weights that won't chip your floor if dropped, and a comfortable ergo handle that distributes weight nicely across the whole dumb-bell.

Bodypower ergo chrome dumb-bells

£1,359

Another set of traditional bells, these. Where Performance is concerned, there's nothing between these and the other Bodypower weights in this review (they go from 1kg-30kgs, they've got the same grippy ergonomic handles and the weight is well balanced across each dumb-bell), so if you want to go old-school, your choice will largely boil down to which ones you think will look best in your living room.

THE WORLDS BEST PERFORMANCE DUMBBELL

Its not how it looks. How much space it takes up is not that important it is how well balanced it is, and my dumbbell will out perform any dumbbell in the world. Your mag should have a competion to see whose dumbbell performs best

I own the SelectTech ones, bought during a sale so were much much cheaper than Powerblocks. Only downside is smaller unselected plates can stick to the bigger ones so as u remove the bar from it's stand they get picked up and then fall to the floor :-( Overall I'm happy with them and have managed to increase the overall weight by attaching additional regular plates to them. http://steroid.blog.co.uk/
