The good: The home version of the high-end commercial treadmill that’s probably in your local gym. That means it’s brimming with workout options and is big enough for almost anyone – the maximum user weight is 180kg. A 4.0HP motor and top speed of 20km/h mean you won’t outrun it in a hurry.
The bad: Its elevation could be better – a mere 15 per cent won’t present much challenge to serious hill runners.
MF verdict: Not cheap, but the best treadmill you can feasibly put in your house.

BEST INCLINE
The good: If you’re a normal runner, you’re never going to need to run on a 40 per cent gradient for any amount of time, but if you’re a fell runner or a hiker, it’s perfect. The belt’s soft and the build’s sturdy, too.
The bad: The four-LED dashboard, 20 preset programs and cool-down button offer plenty of options, but can be a bit confusing.
MF verdict: Strictly for specialists. Or masochists.
Tunturi T85 - £2,544
BEST TECHNO-GIZMO
The good: Near-silent running is a bonus, but the real selling point of the T85 is Position Speed Control. Essentially the belt speeds up or slows down depending on how far forward or back you are, although you can choose to control your speed manually. Great shock-absorbing deck, too.
The bad: It’s pretty expensive, and comparably priced models offer more options.
MF verdict: Lovely if you don’t like pushing buttons while you run.
Horizon Elite 507 - £1,599
BEST VALUE
The good: Until Life Fitness came along, this was the most comprehensive treadmill on the market – and it still offers the best features for anything in its price range. A 3.0HP motor, 0.8-20km/h speed and 12 per cent incline give you plenty of options, while a thick orthopaedic belt and speed toggles on every surface give you comfort and control.
The bad: It isn’t quite as solidly built as the Life Fitness model, and doesn’t offer as many options.
MF verdict: If you're buying on a tight budget, this is the machine for you.
