He’s not usually the fastest hurdler in the world but the new world champion has a favourable record against his main rivals and has a welcome tendency to pace himself well in a tactical event.

Age in 2012 – 26
A below-par performance in the javelin cost Ennis a second world title this year. She’ll learn from that experience, train harder than ever and – we’re confident – finish on top of the podium in London.

Greg Rutherford
Event - Long jump
Age in 2012 – 25
When Rutherford jumped 8.26m to win the national title as a 19-year-old in 2006, it looked like he could one day break the world record. Injuries have hampered his progress but if he’s fit he has the speed (he’s a 10.26sec man over 100m) and ability to bag a medal.

Mo Farah
Event – 5,000m and 10,000m
Age in 2012 - 29
His gold in the 5,000m and silver in the 10,000m at this year’s world championships proved that a training stint in Kenya and his new American coach have helped him tap into his vast talent. The Kenyan runner Kenenisa Bekele will, if fit, be his major challenger.

Tiffany Porter
Event – 100m hurdles
Age in 2012 - 24
US-born Porter started running for Team GB in 2011 and was the fifth fastest woman in the 100m hurdles this season. If she can tidy up her technique while retaining her awesome power, she’ll be hard to beat.
