I like running. I do it a lot. But the enjoyment of any activity diminishes rapidly when you have to do it.
With the marathon four weeks away, I can just see the light at the end of the tunnel. But these final few long runs are proving to be a real drag.
To combat the boredom and fatigue I’ve started splitting my long run into two shorter ones. For instance, on Tuesday I ran 7.5 miles at lunchtime then 10 miles after work. It still hurt but gave me a good few hours to refuel ahead of the evening session.
I’m not prepping my legs for the full onslaught of a marathon so part of me thinks this is cheating but at this stage I’ve got to do whatever it takes to get the miles under my belt.
But enough about me, how’s your marathon training going? If you’re sick to the teeth of never-ending runs, try these boredom-busters.
1. Listen to podcasts. Music is a proven motivator, but I still get bored of hearing the same songs over and over during a long slog. Uploading a few podcasts to your iPod and listening to them on your run keeps things fresh.
2. Set little targets. Whether it’s every mile or getting to the half-way mark, setting targets is a good way to forget that you’re going to be on the road for hours.
3. Run somewhere pretty. There’s nothing better for your mind off the searing pain in your calves than an impressive and inspiring view. Try to find routes that encompass something nice to look at. My favourites include Regent’s Park, Primrose Hill and Hampstead Heath.
