Leave the alfalfa alone

Team Men's Fitness are training for the Namibia Desert Ultra Race. Here's how they're getting on

Team Men's Fitness, Darren Roberts, Nick Tidball, Steve Tidball blog 9

Darren Roberts and Nick Tidball get some pointers from one of the Namibia Desert Ultra Race organisers.

Darren Roberts and brothers Steve and Nick Tidball are Team Men’s Fitness. Here, in their latest Team Men’s Fitness blog, they talk about their ninth week of training for the fearsome 120km Namibia Desert Ultra Race on 8th April.

Steve
Now that I’m running properly again I decided to use this weekend to start testing some of the kit that I’m planning to use in Namibia. I really don’t want to be in the middle of the desert wishing I’d chosen different shoes so I picked the toughest challenge my heels could cope with – I ran back-to-back marathons on Saturday and Sunday in my intended race trainers. They’re Berghaus Phobic Light Flow trail-running shoes, and they’re probably the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever run in. Normally I pick trainers that weigh under a gram, and make it feel like your bones are taking all the impact. These made me feel like I could run all day. Even after Sunday’s marathon, which was mostly on roads, I didn’t ache. In conclusion, I’m sold on these shoes.

Nick
After I returned from Oman the jet lag really hit me so I didn't actually do much for a few days. In preparing for this kind of race you’re told to become a world-class rester so you don't over-stress your body. I think I definitely achieved that status! On Saturday I got back on it and ran up every hill I could find for 1½ hours in the morning, then went for another 1hr 10min run in the afternoon with some sprints at the end. Sprinting through my local heath, head down, covered in sweat, listening to Coldplay at full volume is certainly not that sociable – but it's a lot of fun.

Darren
Following another week of core and upper-body training, I attempted to treat my body like a temple before the Namibian race with a weekend of salad and fruit juices. Unfortunately, one ingredient laid me flat on my back with food poisoning for two days – innocent-looking alfalfa sprouts. Once I'd stopped feeling like death I did a bit of research and found out they can cause salmonella. I'll be googling all my veg from now on.

Thanks to Berghaus for supporting Team Men's Fitness.
