Legs

Lunge
Target: quads, hamstrings, glutes

This classic move requires both power and co-ordination, both of which are vital for sports.

Lunge
  • Rest the bar on the back of your shoulders.
  • Stand with feet apart, looking forward, with your elbows back to retract your shoulder blades.
  • Keep your back upright and your core braced throughout.
  • Take a big step forward, continuing to look forward.
  • Keep your torso upright and don't send your front knee beyond your front foot.
  • Your front foot can be angled slightly inwards to ease pressure on the knee joint.
  • At the bottom of the move your back knee should almost touch the floor.
  • Push off your front foot to go back to the start.

Variation: Split squat

This is like a lunge but without the initial step, so you can ensure that your form is perfect and take some of the pressure off your knees.

Variation: Jumping lunge

From a lunge, jump up and land in another lunge. This move is great for functional power and stability.

Variation: Reverse lunge

By stepping backward instead of forward you place a slightly different stress on your quads and hams.
