Build strongman strength
Mark Felix's all-body strength moves

British World's Strongest Man competitor Mark Felix talks you through his favourite three strength exercises

Mark Felix World's strongest man

Deadlift

‘I haven’t done much deadlift training, but I’ve always been very good at it,’ says Felix, who typically deadlifts around 450kg. It’s one of the events where he regularly comes out on top. ‘It’s important to have a strong back, because it helps your posture in all the events.’

Front squat

‘People want strong arms, but everything comes from the legs,’ says Felix, who can happily squat 220kg for ten reps in training. ‘Leg strength takes the most time to build up, but it’s the most important thing to have.’

Push press

‘You need good technique, you need to be very explosive,’ says Felix, explaining the method behind his favourite combination exercise. He also stresses the importance of rest. ‘We have days when we slack off because of how heavy we push. When you’re pressing 160 kilos you can’t do it every day.’
