Crunch
Target: upper abdominals

The classic move for targeting your upper abs.

Crunch
  • Lie with knees bent to 90° and feet flat on the floor.
  • Hold your head off the mat and touch your fingers to your temples - don't pull on your neck.
  • Contract your abs to lift your shoulders off the mat.
  • Curl your chest towards your knees.
  • Keep your lower back in contact with the mat.
  • Pause at the top of the move, squeeze your abs and lower slowly to the start.

    Variation: Gym ball crunch

Lying on a gym ball works your core harder to stabilise your body and allows for a greater range of movement when doing the crunch.

    Variation: Weighted crunch

If crunches are easy for you, rather than doing more reps, try adding weight to increase intensity and stimulate more muscle growth.

    Variation: Cable crunch

The cable requires you to crunch against a constant force.
