Gore X-Running GT AS, £206.99
Gore’s super-lightweight jacket is fantastically adaptable for any winter aerobic activity where conditions can vary and your body temperature can rocket. The Gore-Tex active shell and close-fitting hood protect you from biting wind and freezing rain, while optional soft-shell sleeves are stowed inside the jacket to keep your arms as warm as your core. A streamlined three-layer design ensures you won’t overheat so you can focus on beating your opponent or PB with the elements already taken care of.

Best for trekking and mountaineering
Rohan Men’s Pinnacle - £325
The steamier it gets inside this jacket, the more rapidly vapour escapes. That’s because of an active diffusion system that responds to your body temperature and the external humidity, ensuring comfort in a wider range of conditions than an ordinary waterproof. Water also beads up on the surface rather than soaking into the fabric. Without this, in really frosty conditions the jacket would stiffen and hinder your progress. It isn’t cheap but you can be sure no corners have been cut with this rugged, all-mountain shell.

Best for skiing and snowboarding
O’Neill Explore Jones 3Layer - £399.99
Designed under the expert guidance of pro freeriding legend Jeremy Jones, this shell offers elite protection and performance, albeit at a steep price. Super-stretch fabric provides superb mobility, breathability and comfort, while taped seams and waterproof zips will keep you bone dry. With more features than a Swiss Army knife it includes pit vents, an adjustable snowgaiter system, audio and goggle pockets that sync with backpack straps and a built-in RECCO Avalanche Rescue System should disaster strike. It’s no failsafe but it’s a worthwhile addition for this state-of-the-art jacket.
